Field Trips...
These field trips, known as
Archaeology Safaris, are conducted in small to medium sized groups,
usually spending 2 to 4 days touring a particular concentration of
sites in the British Isles, Ireland, France, Spain and Italy;

Jersey
The jewel of the channel islands, a tour of beautiful
Jersey and its outstanding Megalithic Architecture,
not least of all: La Hougue Bie. Although the majority
of the monuments we visit are from the Neolithic, many
are multi-period sites and landscapes and this is discussed
in great detail. For example we will be visiting Palaeolithic,
Mesolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and
World War Two sites, as well as the magnificent Neolithic
structures.

Isle of Man
Here we discover Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking
& Medieval monument and settlement sites. There are
many landmarks to spot whilst travelling around this
most famous of Isles. One of the highlights being Cashtal
Yn Ard, which has a small collection of cup-marks on
one of its entrance stones that can only been seen with
the setting sunlight. We also experience other chambered
tombs, standing stones and a splendid collection of
Celtic crosses.

Pembrokeshire
A winter sunshine weekend of touring South West Wales
visiting spectacular sites such as Pentre Ifan, and
also a selection of less well known but enchanting burial
chamber monuments. This part of Wales is packed with
fascinating towns, castles and pre-historic sites. Always
lots of fantastic photographic opportunity with dramatic
skies and rugged landscapes.
|
|
Anglesey
A weekend of exploring this island off the coast of
North Wales, which has a large selection of Neolithic
and Bronze Age megalithic sites. We will see Rock Art
similar to that found in Ireland and discover evidence
of Iron Age and Roman activity. With the Snowdonia mountain
range as spectacular backdrop on the mainland this Archaeology
Safari will be packed full of information and has the
potential for new discoveries!

 |
Cumbria
The rugged and romantic landscape of the Lake District
presents much evidence, hidden away amongst the peaks
and at the sides of the wooded valleys, of the Neolithic
axe industry and Rock Art panels. For most visitors
to Cumbria the countryside and lakeside towns are all
they experience, but to the Archaeologist and enthusiast
the area abounds with the evidence of pre-historic culture
and economics. From the heart of the lakes area we explore
Henges, Stone Circles, Burial Cairns, Rock Art and stone
axe factory sites.
|
|
Cornwall
The course granite, rugged coastline and the strong
light of Cornwall are well known to artists and photographers
as an inspirational landscape in the South West of Britain.
Although the area has yielded tin and other metals on
an industrial scale much of the pre-historic archaeology
has remained due to the problems of cultivation on the
thin soils. Experience the huge Neolithic chambered
Cairn of Ballowal up the coast from Lands End and a
large selection of the Burial Chambers, Standing Stones,
Circles and settlement sites as we wind our way through
the narrow lanes of beautiful Cornwall.
|
 |
|
Orkney
The Orkney islands contain extraordinary examples of
pre-historic life and death and the majority of the
sites are well preserved and presented. A tour of the
islands visiting exceptional Chambered Tombs, Stone
Circles, Standing Stones, Brochs and Earth-houses. To
include the Skara Brae Neolithic settlement, Maes Howe,
the Ring of Brodgar and the Grain Earth-house.
|
|
Ireland
We explore a selection of the spectacular Neolithic
cemetery sites that contain a large proportion of all
the Megalithic Rock Art in Europe. North and West from
Dublin to the spectacular bend of the Boyne Passage-tombs
and also Loughcrew, Fourknocks and Tara. This Archaeology
Safari is truly outstanding, one of the best ways to
increase your knowledge of the Irish and Atlantic Europe
Passage Grave culture that pre-dates the Pyramids of
Egypt.

Spain
In search of Andalusia - This 4 day field trip will be visiting a number of the larger burial chambers, mostly of the gallery grave type that show signs of a restricted access design. There will be a special tour of a cave complex, which contains some outstanding examples of Palaeolithic and Neolithic art. The small (12-14) size group will explore Iberian settlement sites, some interesting examples of Roman architecture and there will be an opportunity to swim in the Roman sulphur baths at Hedionda. All guided by expert archaeologists, starting out each day from superb accommodation up in the hills of Andalusia. There will also be time to enjoy the old and new shops as well as wonder at the huge bridge across the gorge in Ronda.
